Down The Up Staircases

Porcupine Tree - Up The Downstair [DELEC CD 020 UK 1993 FLAC]

The debut album proper by Steven Wilson's Porcupine Tree was essentially a solo project recorded in his parent's home in Hertfordshire. Acid Tapes co-collaborator Alan Duffy did provides some of the lyrics and some of his future band members (who formed the original live band) such as Richard Barbieri helped out where necessary. Wilson hated the mix so much that he later re-recorded some parts with Gavin Harrison on drums and re-worked the rest during 2004.

The resultant revised album first surfaced in 2005 on the Snapper label. This is the Japanese version released a few years later with a bonus CD of the out-take tracks, Staircase Infinities. These new versions benefited from a fuller sound and a better mix with live drums rather than the tacky percussion on the original. The final track, Fadeaway is a revered SWilson classic with obvious Pink Floyd influences.
